Hiking the Riverside Walk in Zion National Park

On the morning of September 18, 2025, I hiked the Riverside Walk in Zion National Park, Utah.

Trip Report

This easy out-and-back hike was two miles long with 193 feet of elevation gain. However, just because it was an easy walk did not make it any less beautiful. This hike was part of a larger trip to several destinations in Utah. These include Antelope Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and the Canyon Overlook hike in Zion.

Parking and Shuttle

We arrived at Zion National Park early so we could get a good parking spot at the park office. We then took the park shuttle up to the Riverside walk and the Narrows trailhead. There are several stops along the way, including the lodge. I would suggest stopping there for snacks, water, and a bathroom break.

Two Hikes, One Path

There are actually two hikes you can take on this path. The Riverside walk is the first, which is a 1-mile paved trail. It ends at a spot where the canyon narrows, and the only way farther is upriver. This section is appropriately called The Narrows. This second section allows you to navigate up the river via several twists and turns. Hikers going up the Narrows obtain hiking sticks, tall rubber boots, or chest waders from the park office. Due to time constraints and physical limitations, our group only hiked the Riverside section.

Hike Out

We started our hike around 9:15 AM, and I was immediately struck by the landscape. A small river carved a path through a valley, creating a beautiful gorge. The path was paved and wide enough for two people to walk side by side comfortably. Crowds of people tended to move in groups, so there were plenty of opportunities for pictures if you were willing to wait a minute or two.

The Narrows

The one place where you cannot avoid the crowds is where the Riverside walk trail ends and the Narrows begins. There were quite a few people getting ready to enter the river or just coming out. Plus, there were plenty of folks like me, navigating rocks to keep their feet dry while still getting a good picture.

Hike Back

After getting my fill of pictures and videos, I started the mile-long walk back to the trailhead.  While I did not have as many people walking with me on the way back, I certainly passed more. Several large groups were on their way to the Narrows. I didn’t take as many photos on the way back, since I’d already gotten plenty on the way out. Plus, I didn’t want to waste any time getting to lunch!

Trip Reflections

What went well

  • While I did not need my trekking poles on the path, I appreciated them while navigating the river rocks in the Narrows
  • While it was certainly warm, the shade from the surrounding canyon walls made it quite pleasant

Even Better If

  • My group was limited in what they could physically do, but if I return, I would like to head up the Narrows a bit to see more of the amazing scenery
